I’m not sure whether your cable is Thunderbolt or DisplayPort. Here’s how to quickly figure it out:
Check the Icons
The easiest way to tell is by inspecting the icons on the cable or near the port:
- Thunderbolt Cable: Look for a lightning bolt symbol next to the connector. This is a clear sign it’s a Thunderbolt cable.
- DisplayPort Cable: A small icon resembling a rectangular monitor indicates it’s a DisplayPort cable.

Even if the ports look similar, these icons make it easy to tell them apart.
Spot the Port Shape Differences
You can also identify the cable by the shape of the port:
- Thunderbolt Port: It looks like a USB-C port—oval with smooth edges.
- DisplayPort: This one is larger and rectangular with a slightly angled corner.

Using these simple visual cues, you can quickly determine whether you have a Thunderbolt or DisplayPort cable.
