Detailed introduction

This AWG calculator is a convenient tool, handy for electronics engineers, electrical engineers, and individuals requiring standard wire gauge specifications. By inputting the AWG value, you swiftly gain access to the following performance metrics:

  • Wire diameter (in inches and millimetres)
  • The cross-sectional area of the wire (in square millimetres)
  • Resistance per 1000 feet (Ohms/1000ft)
  • Resistance per kilometre (Ohms/km)
  • Maximum current-carrying capacity (Amperes)
  • Maximum frequency for 100% skin depth (Hz or kHz)

These details aid in making informed decisions during wire design and selection, ensuring project performance and safety. The AWG calculator features a straightforward design and intuitive operation, enabling you to promptly and accurately retrieve the desired wire specifications and performance data.

Important Notes

  1. Wire gauge from low to high: The smaller the gauge number, the larger the wire diameter. Conversely, the higher the AWG number, the smaller the wire diameter.
  2. Cable Size Definition: AWG specifies the diameter of the conductor itself, not the total thickness of the cable including insulation.
  3. AWG Precision: AWG sizes do not exactly convert to millimetres or inches, so rounding may be necessary for practical applications.
  4. Distinguishing AWG and SWG: Do not confuse AWG (American Wire Gauge) with SWG (Standard Wire Gauge). SWG is an outdated British standard now largely replaced by metric measurements. Always verify the correct thickness when purchasing wire or cable.
  5. AWG Gauge Calculator Range: Our AWG gauge calculator provides data for sizes ranging from 4/0 to 40. For information on other sizes, please contact us for the latest data.
